Associated Oils is credited with the distinction of pioneering the collection, processing and re-sale of
used cooking oil in Queensland on a commercial scale. The company was founded by Frank Hutton
some eighteen years ago when he convinced used cooking oil generators such as restaurants, fast
food outlets, shopping centres etc, to store their spent cooking oil in purpose built containers which
were supplied and collected by Associated Oils.
Today, the business has been an integral part of the Transpacific Industries Group (TPI) since December
2002 and utilises its own vehicles to collect used cooking oils from north to Rockhampton and south to
Branxton in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. To compliment collections Associated Oils also
uses approved collection agents in areas to ensure waste cooking oil generators have the means
available to them for an effective and environmentally approved recycling system for their used oils.
As the hospitality industry uses different types of cooking oils and tallows, Associated Oils is able to
produce a varying range of end products to satisfy the market that it generally supplies, which is the
manufacturers of stockfeeds, primarily the beef and poultry industries.
The oil products supplied by Associated Oils are used to add fat, energy and nutrients to the feeds that
are produced. Recycled used cooking oil can also be used for the manufacture of low grade industrial
soaps or more recently bio-diesel.
Associated Oils also stores seed oils and tallows in a heated tank farm on behalf of third parties for
packaging in drums and export in standard containers, including storage and bulk transfer to the wharf
for export in specialised ships.
In March 2004 Associated Oils relocated the transport, processing and storage facilities to a new,
shared site with ATS (Australian Terminal Services, a Transpacific joint venture company) at the Port
of Brisbane’s Fisherman Islands. The relocation will provide Associated Oils with a facility that reflects
the high standard of processing, safety and environmental systems within the TPI group.
Services and Products:
Associated Oils has built specifically-designed bins, which are used for the
collection of used cooking oil. Upon being unloaded at the plant, the cooking oil
undergoes an extensive cleaning process, filtering the product through 100
micron screens. The clean, recycled product is subsequently sold to the livestock
industry as stockfeed additive for chickens, cattle, pigs and pet food.
The oil is also exported internationally to make low-grade soap.
